Nia gained a pound and an inch this past month, which is a nice growth spurt. She's not as skinny as she sounds, she still has a nice layer of baby fat. She is very long, as always!
If Nia's sleep could get worse than ever, it did. The night weaning didn't go well, and at the 9 month checkup I asked again for advice from another doctor. The gradually decreased feedings backfired into a baby who cried and woke all night long every night, and this month the doctor suggested feeding her a full bottle of water at the 2-3am feed. She said the baby will naturally just stop waking up after 3 nights of water, as it is just not worth the trouble. Well... THAT didn't go over well!
Not only is Nia not used to taking a bottle, forget trying to give her water, AKA POISON. The night waking turned into full-speed crying sessions lasting 1-1/2 to 3 hours. 3 HOURS. Constant wailing. Sometimes more than once - if she fell asleep after an hour of screaming, she just woke in 45 minutes to cry straight through to 6am when she gets up. What a freaking nightmare. But we knew we had to stick to the plan for at least a week, no matter what. She even started crying more at naps and taking short ones.
I checked out Ian's growth blog to see where he was at 9 months. He had not been sleeping well either, however I'm the only one who remembers that! (click the links for his posts).
But when I got to the point when he started walking, the day and night sleep problems started to add up. He had a week of terrible sleep and sudden refusal of naps right before he took off taking steps with confidence. As I suspected, not only was Nia going through needing to be weaned from night feedings, but she's been working hard on walking. I was not excited for Ian to walk, since it meant a more mobile kid getting hurt - but with Nia, I've been waiting for the moment because I know she will finally give in to sleep!
And of course, then it happened!
After a few days of the intense crying, Nia slept through the night (with a 10:15pm dream feed).
She only cried a couple minutes at 3 and 5am. 6:45p-6:45a sleep, no crying spells!
I thought "today she will walk".
She was quiet and played alone without complaints, napped without any protest, and then around noon, she took a few steps from the kid's table to daddy, in the basement. Please let her sleep from now on!
9/24/16 update:
She's been sleeping well, as we hoped! She still needs to dream feed, but she lets us sleep until at least 5am. The mornings are staying dark lately, so it's a bit confusing for her, but we'll take 5 or 6am any day!
10/1/16 update:
So the week of sleep is over. Back to multiple wakings, long crying spells and crankiness! Getting more steady on the feet, though!
----
In the 9th month, overall, Nia started learning to feed herself cheerios. She spent little time on crawling and worked on standing, stabilizing and cruising around. The more mobile she got, the happier baby she became.
Here are some photos from August and September.
