8 Months:
Height: 27.3"... no growth this month... but weight is up a bit!
Weight: 15lb 4oz
Head:42 cm
Month 8 was a huge one for Nia's physical development!
Nia started the 8th month sitting, but still falling over sometimes, not too sturdy. At 7-1/2 months she went from planking to crawling. She spent about a week crawling, which clearly was not good enough for her. She obsessed over pulling up until she could stand supported. She was not happy on the floor at all. At the start of August, she sits strong, her crawling is good, and she easily pulls up on anything available, even the wall. She is starting to cruise around holding on. She even tries to take steps if you hold her hand. We had to get her a walker, to keep her occupied and safe, since she doesn't just crawl around she just tries to pull up on everything and gets hurt. She won't leave us alone, she mostly wants to climb our legs, whether we are sitting, standing or walking around. She loves the walker and took to it immediately.
This month Nia started have a very small interest in toys beyond chewing them. Her teething complaints were replaced by frustration in moving around. ---- By the way, what we thought was a tooth peeking up for the last 4 months disappeared! The doctor said maybe it was a cyst!---
She seems to understand how to operate the toys if you show her a couple times, such as stacking blocks, putting rings on the ring toy, or sticking magnets together. She can't necessarily do it with her coordination, but she tries a bit.
Nia started the month saying "da da da" and little coos and babbles. She took a break from being very vocal to work on moving around. She's pretty quiet except frustrated cries. Her mood is greatly improved during her play time and day, now that she's mobile.
Her sleep has still been a bit crazy. She naps 2-3 times, depending how long they are. She cries for 5-20 minutes or so for every nap, but the Dr said that may just be how she goes to sleep for now - since her naps are a good solid 1 hr 15 minutes on average. Night time is still tough.
We are still so sleep deprived I can't even remember all the highs and lows of her sleep the last month and a half. She was waking 2 times, sometimes a 3rd and just crying for hours until 6am. The Dr said to wean her from her middle of the night feed by reducing nursing minutes each day, and keep 11pm "dream feed". Well, that backfired. I took 2 weeks slowly reducing from 8 minutes (where she ate a bit and went to sleep happily for at least a couple hours after) to 2 minutes. At 7 & 6 minutes she protested a few minutes and fell back asleep at 3am - to wake up at 4 or 5 - for the day, unhappy! By 4-5 minutes she decided to wake at 1:30am instead of 3, and then wake up a 3rd time at 4am, falling back asleep and waking for the day at 5am-5:30am. So we went from 2 pleasant night feedings, and a rough early morning, to 3 wakings, 2 with crying, and an early waking!
She did do one miracle night this week, when we put her to bed early to make up for the previous sleep deprivation screw up 24 hours before. We put her in at 6:15, she woke screaming with gas pains for an hour from 7:30 on, and after some gripe water and a big feeding, she slept through until 4am, fed her again and she rose at 6:30. Fantastic! Except I anticipated her waking at 11:30 and 2 and had a hard time sleeping, myself!
So after working down to 2 minutes feedings in the middle of the night, I give up. 1:30 2 minute feeding and changing followed by 1 hour of crying and I know it's just not working after 2 weeks. I would much rather go in for 8-10 minutes, feed her and go back to sleep, even if it's just until 5am. I can't deal with all the night crying even if she doesn't really need food. We'll try again after this 8 month sleep regression is over... if it's even happening now, her sleep has always been so terrible it's hard to tell the regressions.
It is a lot easier to put up with the fussing now that Nia is waking up smiling at 6am. She stands or plays in her crib, even with her full diaper every morning! She coos and smiles and screeches after I come for her. Funny I haven't actually got any pictures of her smiling. That's usually when she's on the move jumping or in the walker.
Here is a video I put together of her crawling and walking progress this month:
