Teeth still haven't come, but hands are good for chewing
Today at Nia's 5 month appointment we discussed many issues. The good news is that at 4 months, she was hardly eating and sleeping, most likely due to teething. Although her teeth have still not popped through, the pain seems rarely to bother her now. She is eating great, and the sleeping has slightly improved - but it is still really really terrible!

We think some of the sleep problems, and continued crankiness have something to do with being constipated. Aside from some sleep associations like nursing, rocking and pacifier, we think the belly pain is keeping Nia up. I do think she is actually hungry when she wakes at night, too. We tried nursing only once but she would stay awake fussing for hours. We may try to eliminate the pacifier too, since she seems to need it to sleep, yet can't put it in by herself.

Between the night hunger and constipation, we decided it's time to start solid foods - and the Dr. agrees. So we gave Nia her first oatmeal cereal today, and she loved it! At first she pushed it back out with her tongue in reflex, but finished the whole bowl eventually getting the hang of it. The Dr. wants her to have oats, barley, carrots and yellow squash to add fiber to her diet and fill her belly. Also a little brown sugar, water and even non-gmo corn syrup are to be added to help her empty her belly.

Nia has an ongoing problem with dry skin, just like Ian. I thought her head scratching was a self-soothing reflex, rubbing her head and grabbing at her thighs. The Dr. thinks she is actually scratching itches, and wants to have her on Benadryl to end the cycle. We also need to keep up with the ointment all over her body twice a day, or even a mild hydrocortisone cream for a bit, and continue coconut oil on her head. The bath rule continues to be every 3 days, so unfortunately we still can't use it as part of the bedtime routine.

So we have a lot of changes this week, and continue to work on her sleep. It's improving - we can't wait to finally get 3 hours in a row ( I think that may have happened a couple times last night). 4 or 5 hours will be really wonderful!

She still cries a lot

Yes, crying, a LOT
